On October 11, 2016, the PREIABET: Time to Act program was launched in Moscow, initiated by Merck in partnership with the Endocrinological Research Center of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
The aim of the program is to inform the public about the problem of prediabetes and how to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes.
According to the World Health Organization, diabetes mellitus (DM) is the main cause of the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and takes 3rd place in the world among the causes of mortality. Type 2 diabetes develops gradually and at first imperceptibly for the patient. The condition preceding the manifestation of type 2 diabetes, experts call prediabetes.
The prevalence of prediabetes in developed countries ranges from 10 to 16% among adults [1]. According to the results of the first national epidemiological study NATION, in Russia 19.3% of the population, or ~ 20.7 million people, live with prediabetes [2]. This term is used to emphasize a high risk of developing the disease in the future. Prediabetes is characterized by the presence of the following factors: impaired glycemia (blood glucose level) on an empty stomach or impaired glucose tolerance.
One of the key problems in the prevention of type 2 diabetes is the late detection of prediabetes, insufficient patient awareness of the problem and how the disease occurs and develops. In the course of the All-Russian VTsIOM survey conducted this year, it turned out that only 28% of Russians over 35 years old are aware of the state of “prediabetes”. During the VTsIOM survey, 77% of respondents over 35 said: “the doctor never said” that they are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
According to the Ketle index (body mass index), 65% of Russians over 35 have overweight or obesity, which is an important risk factor for the development of prediabetes. That is why today large-scale work is needed aimed at informing the general public about prediabetes.
“Currently, due to the low level of early diagnosis, we are losing about 10 years of the natural course of diabetes. If we detected prediabetes at an early stage, the development of type 2 diabetes could be delayed or completely avoided. Lifestyle changes and drug therapy help to correct the course of the disease. But it is critically important to use a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of prediabetes. It is important that therapists pay attention to its symptoms in patients, regardless of what complaints they have made, "said Ametov Alexander Sergeevich, MD, professor , Head of the Department of Endocrinology and Diabetology, GBOU DPO RMAPE of the Ministry of Health of Russia, Member of the Presidium of the All-Russian Society of Endocrinologists, Chairman of the Education Committee of the Russian Association of Endocrinologists.
Roger Janssens, director of Merck Biopharm in Russia and the CIS, said: “Updating the topic of the development of type 2 diabetes and its prevention is one of the acute problems of modern health care. Scientists, doctors, and pharmaceutical companies around the world are working on it."Merck" is a socially responsible company, we work for the benefit of patients, and are happy to support such information and educational projects. "
Ph.D., Alexei Zilov, member of the Presidium of the Russian Association of Endocrinologists, commented on the initiative of Merck and the Endocrinology Research Center of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences: “Prediabetes is closely associated with obesity. It is one of the key symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, which, in turn, is associated with with many pathological conditions. The main problem in diagnosing this condition is that prediabetes is often asymptomatic and comes to light by chance when a person goes to the doctor for a completely different reason. Our task is to inform as many Russians as possible: obesity or an increased body mass index are a reason to suspect a risk development of prediabetes, and subsequently type 2 diabetes. If you have this risk factor, consult a doctor, get tested! Adjusting your lifestyle is much easier than fighting the disease! "
Dzgoeva Fatima Khadzhimuratovna, candidate of medical sciences, doctor of the highest category, member of the European Atherosclerotic Society and the European Society of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism: "Changing lifestyle and nutrition is the main success factor in the fight against prediabetes. No need to go on a diet - you need to adhere to a rational approach to nutrition, reasonably combining it with physical activity and not forgetting about a good mood. Prediabetes is a "bell" of the body that you need to hear and take action.Time to act - and act now. "
